Overview | Resource Management | Reforestation

Malaysia covers an area of over 19.4 million hectares of natural tropical rainforest. Among the 19.4 million hectares, 14.7 million hectares are in the Eastern side of Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) and 4.7 million hectares are in West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia). From a bird's eye view, Sarawak appears to be a sea of green due to majority of the land area (8.7 million hectares or 71%) is covered with natural tropical forest. Out of the 8.7 million hectares, 3 million hectares (24%) is secondary forest with shifting cultivation and some 60,000 hectares (5%) is either under cultivation or have been urbanized.

However, deforestation has become a major problem in the world today. Establishment of protective forest plantation system is also required to combat desertification and soil erosion. The conservation of natural forest will certainly become increasingly difficult if forest management is not properly established in an appropriate manner.

One of the ways to fight deforestation is using planted forest technique whereby trees are replanted with exactly the same number of trees that are being chopped down. Shin Yang Forestry (SYF) believes planted forest can help to maintain the ecological balance of the environment.

SYF has also made substantial contributions in managing the natural resources (logs) effectively by research and development and coming up with modern methods and state of the art technology to utilize the logs fully with minimum wastage.

Environment Friendly Task

Natural resources that are found on earth are not easily replaced once they are used up. Let's take oil as an example. It will take virtually centuries to replace the crude oil on earth. Same goes for metals which are so commonly used.

Wood is another natural resources which is difficult to be replaced. However, with proper management and control by the government and the public, we can be sure of the availability of wood almost perpetually. Thus, SYF has come to realize the importance of sustainable yield management of our forests whereby there is a need for a balance in the ecological, social and economic usage of forest.

Our role:

  • Recognizing our responsibility in complying with the worldwide environmental guiding principle for the purchase of tropical wood and other wood products.

  • Supporting suppliers who operate on sustainable forest management and encouraging others to do the same.

  • Participate in organizations that promote the use of sustainable forest management through contributions and involvement.

  • As a member of Sarawak Timber Association (STA), we are involved in the implementation of sustainable forest management in the concession areas in Sarawak, Malaysia grated by the relevant Authority. In addition, we practice careful forest management by developing our own strategies for all timber harvesting operations.
